Locating Counselor CEUs Via Online Continuing Education Providers

Not again, your license renewal is looming around the corner. Now you have to remember where you put all of those fliers, postcards, and brochures of the various CEU providers that you received over the last year or two. Not what most licensed counselors look forward to doing, however, needs to be done.

So, what options are there? One of them is to attend a workshop or conference out of state. This takes a lot of money and time aside from the workshop or conference itself. Then there is the time and money for the actual conference. Once there you may or may not get enough value to consider it worth your time and money. This has been the traditional method of earning continuing education units/credits (CEUs) over the years. There has to be a better way.

Behold the greatness of the world wide web. Online continuing education is a booming field. There are so many options online, plus most states now accept CE credits from this venue. The time and money savings really add up. Time and money saved that would have been spent at the airport, rental car place, hotel, etc. Money and time that used to be spent can now be invested in more rewarding things like your family and your practice.

So, if attaining one’s CE online is the path to choose, how do you find the right provider? Not all CE providers are on the same level. There is a list of items to consider when checking out various providers online. Any of these things in and of themselves are great, but, if you can find them all in one location, that would be ideal.

Being approved as an online CE provider for counselors in your state is the most vital and the first thing to look for in each provider. The one approval that covers Professional Counselors in most states is the one from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Check to see if the provider has this approval. If they are approved by the NBCC, there should be a provider number accessible on their website. Even though this approval covers most states, some states are not. Do your homework and know what your state board accepts.

The course list would be a smart next step in your evaluation. Ask yourself, “Does this provider have all of the courses I need to fulfill my requirements?” Not only is it more convenient for you to attain all of your CE in one place, but you can usually get better pricing as well. If the provider has all of the courses you need now, that’s great. Go one step further, do they have enough courses to meet your needs next renewal and so on. Take this time as an opportunity to grow and develop beyond where you are now. Another tid bit on the courses. Check to see that they are sourcing their information and that the sources used are well accepted.

Another area of interest are the premium items. Features which include not having to pay if you don’t pass the exam, being allowed unlimited chances to pass an exam, great customer service, access to all of the coursework and exam questions, and an easy to use website.

Attaining CE online has definitely made the process much easier and more cost effective. However, there is still more progress to be made. Be sure to do your homework, know your own state’s rules and regulations and look for the things mentioned above in each online provider you research. All of this will culminate in a more robust continuing education experience.
