Should I request a hearing to avoid record/points for a speeding ticket?
Help!!!
I’ve had my driver license for 5 years and I just got my first speeding ticket in Berrien County, Michigan (80mph on a 70 hwy). I admitted I was speeding when I was pulled over and the officer wrote 80 instead of 85 which is recorded by his laser. I’m fine with paying the ticket but I really don’t wanna receive points and have my insurance go up. From researching online, it seems that if you plead guilty, the magistrate or judge will make you a deal which still involves a fine but doesn’t keep a record. Is this like a standard process for 1st timers i.e. go to hearing, plead guilty, pay the fine and no record? or does it vary from court to court? I’m just trying to figure out my chances because I live 4 hours away in Illinois and I don’t wanna go to the court for the same or even worse penalty.
Also, Berrien county doesn’t allow you to take any online driving course to reduce the points. It seems like going to a hearing is my only option.

Will a previous driving probation show up on your driving record once that probation time frame has passed?
For example if you get a traffic ticket, & the judge offers to not issue a fine or charge as long as you get no further tickets for the next 6 months- is that something that shows on your driving record?
Amy – it’s not really ‘official probation’- the judge referred to it as a probationary period- I had a clean driving record at the time, so the judge offered to dismiss the ticket if I did not have any further tickets in 6 months- I was issued a new court date for that time & when I returned with no further traffic violations he told me I was free to go- It’s a common practice for traffic court. But I’m not sure how or if it shows up on my driving record after the fact.
If you did not get a ticket while you were on probation then no it will not show up on your drivers license. If you take defensive driving all that shows up is that you took defensive driving. It does not show why you took defensive driving. If you do not do either of these then what you got the ticket for will show up on your drivers license.
