Can I buy a rifle in Kansas then give it as a gift to my father in IL?

I am 24. Clean record. I live in Kansas. Father is late 50′s Nam’ vet. Clean record. He lives in IL. He has his FOID Card. I want to get him a Colt AR 15 semi-auto. After buying the gun, I will take it with me when I visit him in June/July in IL. I will be driving. (as long as that is legal) Is there some kind of transfer paperwork? Is it all legal? Please help!
I know the Colt AR-15 is legal where my Father lives. It is not a full-auto. They sell them at the county gun shows, and at some retail stores.

Dean – I am not sure that law applies to the AR-15. Thanks for the link though. I will research some more.

If you’r driving it up there, a gift is fine. If your planning on mailing, just mail him a check and tell him to buy what he wants. And it will save you time and money.

Out of state sales need to go to an FFL before the recipient of the rifle can take possession of it. As others have said, this will cost you approx $30 FFL fee plus approx $30 shipping.
