Car insurance/registration?? Please help! …PCSing from germany to virginia… help?!?
I am stationed in germany and moving to virginia in a month. I do not have car insurance, or a car for that matter, and never had insurance.
Background:
I grew up in Michigan and have a friend who’s selling me his truck. I’m going straight to Virginia, and he is having it hauled down to my base.
Registration / Insurance:
How do I go about getting insurance for this truck, as well as registration?? Will I register it in the state of Michigan, because thats my home of record & have a Michigan license? Will I need Michigan plates, or Virginia plates??
What about insurance?? How do I go about getting that?? Can I setup an insurance plan online before I drive it? Or do I need to drive it to an insurance agency??
Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated!!!

Let me answer this one GI to another…When you get a car in the military, there are three items that make the car legal: 1. Your Driver’s License, 2. Your Registration, 3. Your Auto Insurance. Two out of the three of them have to be from the same state. Since your home of record is in MI, I would recommend that you keep your MI Driver’s License and also register the car in MI. I would strongly recommend that you get your insurance in VA since each state has their own individual insurance requirements. You will be legal this way as long as you are active duty.
In order to get insurance, it will be possible to do that online; I would recommend Geico, since they originally started out as Government Employees Insurance COmpany. Go to geico.com and you will be able to insure the vehicle online.
To register the vehicle you will need to go through the Secretary of State office in Lansing. Here is the website address:
