How do I get a car title in California for a title-less car?

I am the owner of a VW Golf I bought brand new in 1998. I purchased the car in Colorado, but shortly thereafter moved to California. The car was initially registered in California and was never registered in Colorado. I tried to trade in the car a couple years ago and was appalled when the dealer told me the car had no title. I didn’t understand how this could be the case since a car has to be titled to be able to register it in the first place. I talked with the California DMV and they told me I had to get the situation straightened out with the Colorado DMV. So this past summer I drove the car all the way from San Diego to get this situation straightened out. When I get there, the Colorado DMV tells me it’s a problem the California DMV has to straighten out. I believe the CO DMV is correct because they told me that California purges their DMV records every four years or so, so even if there was a title it could have been deleted. Anyways, HELP!!!!

You have a registration. You own it. You know it was never registered in Colorado. I have heard horror stories about California before. (just to throw that in there). This is California’s problem, and the only thing I can suggest right now is filing for a duplicate title. If you have a current registration, then they have a current record of you owning the car! I don’t understand the Cali DMV sometimes …

I don’t know if Cali keeps electronic titles; I sure hope not if they purge their records every 4 years. Jeez. I am sorry about your situation.

My girlfriend was inquiring about insurance on some jet ski’s and they said there was a problem because I lived in her house with her and they pulled my driving record without my permission. I have a not as good driveing record so they cancelled her insurance on her car because I was living there.. my question is does her insurance company have the right to pull my information and driving record without my permission?

Yes they do. It’s public information but they would have to have your drivers license # and date of birth and pay a fee. They may not have pulled your record. Your presence alone would cause then to cancel if she denied your presence on the application.r
