Speeding in Wisconsin (84 in a 65); Live in Maryland – do these states talk?
I am from Maryland. I was visiting some friends down in Chicago, so I flew into Milwaukee because the airline ticket prices were a lot cheaper. Upon driving back to the airport in Milwaukee, I was pulled over for going 84 in a 65. Yes, I admitted that I was late for my flight and was speeding. The state trooper issued me a $276.10 speeding ticket. I have no received a speeding ticket in over 6 years, so I am not aware of Maryland’s points system, etc. I heard somewhere that some states do not talk to each other regarding points. Is that true? The ticket says it could be a maximum of 6 points on my driving record. Do Wisconsin and Maryland talk? And yes, I know my rates for my insurance will go up and I am willing to pay the consequences for my actions.
Not all states use points, and those that do have completely different systems. Because the meaning of accumulating points is different between states, they are not applicable between them and there they do not transfer.
For example, In MD the max you can earn is 12 points and it results in revocation of your license. Whereas in WI if you earn 12 points in one year, it only results in a two month suspension. In essence, it’s apples and oranges.
States will talk to each other with regards to registration, suspension or revocation though. That is to say, if you get your license suspended in one state, it’s suspended for all of them. If you failed to pay your WI ticket and they suspend your license for it, then it will hurt you in Maryland. But if you pay, you have nothing to worry about.
