Social Work CE- Where Do I Find My State Board’s Approved Provider Criteria? (Question Two)

Question #1 was answered in an earlier article, which was, “What does my state require in continuing education for social workers?”. In this article I will be addressing the question, “Where do I find my Social Workers State Board’s approved provider criteria?”. The answer to this question will help you determine where to go to fulfill your CE requirements.

So, first thing is finding out what your state board requires of you, following this, it is necessary to verify what constitutes an approved provider. Each state board has its own set of criteria for determining an approved CE provider, of which may or may not be the same in another state. Knowing your state’s specific criteria will help you narrow the field of your choices. Prior to finding the specifics for your state board, I will explain the three categories of pre-approved providers.

Some state boards will only accept CE from providers who have applied for approval from them. If a provider has been approved by a specific state board they will have been assigned a unique provider number. As an Example, if you are a licensed Social Worker in California, you have to take courses from a CE provider that has been approved by the CA BBS and has their own PCE#. Be sure to ask the CE provider for your state board’s approval number if your state falls into this category.

Another category are those state boards that accept providers who have received approval from a national board. For example, Connecticut social workers can earn CE from a provider who has been approved by the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors). Different states and different professional boards accept different national approvals, know which ones your state board accepts.

The next category are those state boards that allow licensees to use providers approved by a different state board that governs the same profession. For example, an LCSW who is licensed in Alabama is authorized to receive their CE from a provider approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California (CA BBS), since the CA BBS governs Social Workers. After going over these three categories, how do you find out what your state board accepts?

You will want to begin at your state board’s home page of their website. Once on the home page, look for a link titled something such as “Rules and Regulations” (or statutes, rules, etc.). After getting to the rules document you will need to find the section on continuing education within that document. The acceptable sources according to your state board will be explained here. For Oregon Social Workers, the section you are looking for is “Continuing Education Reporting Requirements”. In this section will be where you will find out which category your state board falls into and what providers they accept.

Armed with this information you are now able to start looking for the right online CE provider. Your search will not be as frustrating have done your pre-work. If the approval information you are looking for is not readily available on the CE provider’s website, ask them for it. If the provider does not have the proper approvals, go to the next one. The next question to be answered will be, “What is the limit of CE that I can earn online?”, stay tuned.
