How Can I Determine My Counselor Board’s CE Provider Requirements? – Question Two

Question #1 was answered in a previous article, which was, “What continuing education requirements must I complete for my particular license?”, in relation to licensed counselors. This article will seek to answer the question, “Where can I locate my state board’s approved provider criteria?”, using licensed counselors as the ongoing example. In answering this question you will be able to determine where to go to fulfill your CE requirements. Knowing what your state board requires of you to renew your license is step one, the next piece of the puzzle is what does your board require from the providers of the CE courses.

That which is acceptable as approved continuing education will vary among state boards (as it pertains to independent providers). Before you start your search for an approved provider, you will need to know what your state board accepts. I will guide you to where the answer for this question can be found, but first, let’s take a peek at how the state boards’ requirements for providers differ.

Among a few state boards, providers must receive approval from them in order to be approved. State boards that require this will then issue an individually assigned provider number to those they have approved. As an illustration, for Ohio counselors, you must obtain your CE from a Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board of Ohio approved provider who has a valid RCX#. If your state falls into this category, Solicit for the provider number granted by your state board from each CE provider you investigate.

Other counselor state boards accept the approvals from certain national organizations. As an example, if the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) grants approval to a provider than a Professional Counselor in Minnesota may use them to earn their continuing education. This national approval will be in lieu of receiving approval directly from the state board. It is one or the other, but does not have to be both.

There are several states that allow their licensees to use providers approved by a similar board in a different state. As an example, in Colorado, a licensed counselor is able to obtain CE from a provider approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (CA BBS), due to the fact that LPCCs in California are under the regulation of the BBS. Now that the different scenarios of what is accepted regarding providers has been established, where do you go to find out what your state board allows?

The first step is accessing the official home page of your state board. Once on their site, look for a link for their rules, statutes, laws, or something similar. After you have made it to the correct document locate the section for continuing education. Within this section will be a description on what the board views as acceptable venues for acquiring your CE. For Pennsylvania counselors, be searching for the section labeled “Pre-approved providers of continuing education courses and programs for professional counselors”. This area will tell you which scenario described above your state board falls into (accepting a nationally approved provider, a provider approved in another state, or one that is approved by them only).

Once you have this knowledge you can begin your next quest of finding the best provider of continuing education. This information will make things easier going forward. Make sure that CE provider states clearly which approvals they have been granted. If not there, move on. My next article I will set out to answer the question “What amount of CE can I earn online?”. Be watching for it.
