When’s the best time to apply for a truck driving job?
Me and my friend are looking to start a career in truck driving as a team o-t-r.
We both have clean records, awesome work references (minus 1 a piece) and clean driving records…we’re both unexperienced and need to be trained but we want to sign up for one of those big company training programs…yes we know we need to work there at least a year and yes we know the pay and hours are crappy at first ..but as with any job you need to work your way up.
so, my real question is, when is the best time to apply for this job? does it matter when? or are truck driving companies looking more during certain times of the year.
oh yeah we’re both woman too so does that work to our advantage or no..?? because i noticed the truck driving industry has a pretty low percentage of woman and minorities and based on the way other jobs hire i would think they would need to integrate more.

There’s not really one season that they focus on recruiting. There is a huge shortage of truck drivers right now and that will get worse as older drivers retire, so trucking companies are offering huge bonuses and great benefits to attract new drivers. Now is a great time to get into the field. Find a driving school that offers job placement upon graduation and you will have no problems finding a company that will help pay your tuition. Some of the larger companies will put you through school if you sing a contract stating you will work for them at least one year after graduating. That’s not a bad thing, it just means you’re garaunteed a job when you get out, and you need at least a year experience anyways (as you already know).
At truck stops you can get little catalogues or books that advertise the different school and companies, what benefits they offer and where they drive. There are also many websites that offer the same information. Research the companies, talk to other drivers about them, and call the recruiters to get started. There are so many pay/financing options, it’s just a matter of what works for you. Good luck to you both! Once you get your CDL, you’ll be good to go.
