The Piccolo Express Lift on will run to the Piccolo peak from the bottom of Flute Bowl and will open up more than 1000 acres of the most spectacular high alpine terrain available in North America. This is terrain that has historically been available only to the hardiest of ski-mountaineers, since each vertical metre of descent into this legendary bowl had to be paid for with perhaps half a minute of hard climbing. And given that this lift will be 2112 metres long, with a vertical elevation of 509 metres – well, you can do the math. Question 2- Where Do I Find What CE Providers My MFT Board Accepts?
The question posed in my earlier article was, “What CE requirements do I have for my particular license?”, LMFTs specifically. I will answer within this article the next logical question, “How do I find out what CE providers are acceptable by my state board?”, also pertaining to those licensed as MFTs. With this knowledge you will be better able to find the right CE provider. After you have learned what your personal requirements are for continuing education, secondly, you need to know what is allowed from the CE providers.
Not all state boards have the same criteria for what they determine as an acceptable CE provider. When you begin your search for an approved provider, it will be helpful to know what your state board accepts. I will show you where to find the answer to this question, but first, let’s evaluate the variations of what constitutes an approved provider of continuing education among the different state boards.
One of the variations is having the state board accept CE only from providers who are directly approved by them. Providers will then have a unique provider number issued by the board of that state. As an example, if you are a licensed MFT in California, you can only take CE courses from a provider approved by the BBS in California, and they must have their own PCE#. If your state falls into this category, look for the unique provider number issued by your state board with each CE provider you research.
CE providers who have earned approval from certain national boards are accepted in some states. To illustrate, in Arizona, an LMFT can earn CE from a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) approved provider. This national approval obtained by a provider allows them to offer continuing education courses to licensees in states that accept the NBCC approval.
Yet another scenario are those states that accept CE from providers who have been approved in another state for the same license type. To illustrate, in Colorado, a licensed MFT is able to obtain CE from a provider approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (CA BBS), due to the fact that MFTs in California are under the regulation of the BBS. This explains the various approvals accepted by the different state boards, however, where can you locate what is accepted by your particular state board?
The first step is accessing the official home page of your state board. Once on their site, look for a link for their rules, statutes, laws, or something similar. Once you have found the document with the board’s rules for MFTs, find the section on continuing education. The section on CE will describe the approved sources of continuing education. MFTs in Texas, find the section called “Types of Acceptable Continuing Education”. This area will tell you which scenario described above your state board falls into (accepting a nationally approved provider, a provider approved in another state, or one that is approved by them only).
Now you are ready to actually begin your search for the right provider, having obtained this other knowledge . You will be spared a lot of hassle knowing this ahead of time. Once at a provider’s site, look for their approvals. If this information is not available go to the next provider.
