Standards for the safety and awareness of such employees as police and fire personnel, emergency and road workers, utility and construction employees, as well as airport ramp employees are important. ANSI Class 2 developed these standards primarily concerned with safety wear and accessories that are easily visible and able to draw attention. What the institute basically does is accredit standards developing organizations (SDO’s) that work together to develop standards throughout the nation on products such as safety vest. These standards are voluntary and decided upon with the consensus of the SDO’s. These SDO’s must constantly adhere to a set of requirements to stay in compliance.

The class 2 requires that the background material of the garments must be fluorescent and reflective. The colors, when worn in a working area, must be completely different than that of the environment. The suggested fluorescent colors are green/yellow, red and orange/red. The jacket should be full length with full sleeves and a hood. As with all requirements, these standards have been developed, reviewed and approved the ANSI and SDO under a mutual interest of openness, balance, consensus and due process.

The reflective material itself and how it is used on the garment is regulated as well. One reflective band, rounding the entire torso, should be present and offer visibility at all angles. Reflective arm bands will be placed between the elbow and the shoulder. Another arm band should be located around the cuff of each sleeve.

Prior to being approved the reflective, as well as that of the secondary material is put through a series of tests. This battery includes testing for how well it folds in colder environments and flexibility. It is also tested for how well the reflectivity holds up after numerous laundering and its performance in rainfall and resiliency to abrasion.

In studies conducted have shown that employees who wear the ANSI approved material are less likely to be injured or killed by motor vehicles and moving equipment on job sites. Employees who know they are adequately protected can keep a concentrated mind on the job and tasks at hand. The organizations who require their employees to comply with these standards do so with safety at the top of their list.

Third-party laboratories test all the garments and material prior to being adopted by the ANSI. There are detailed and specific guidelines that tell these laboratories how each article should be tested. Change for the better is always taking place and the class 2 standards have been revised once already.

When accidents happen in the work place, they can cost money and time to both employer and employee. However, the greatest tragedy is that of loss of life or limb. The ANSI Class 2 standards are present to minimize those emergencies first and foremost on items such as safety vest.
