Physical Therapy license and one misdemeanor?

Hello there, I am a college student who want to become a physical therapist. When I was 24 I acquired the title of the misdemeanor(reckless driving with no alcohol involved) I was driving with spare tire and driving with more than suggested spare tire speed limit and caused collision. NO one got hurt.

I have served informal probation and no trouble with law ever since and it has been 7yrs since the incident.

Will this record prohibit me from obtain Physical therapy license in California?

I believe not.

Your primary risk seems to come from California Code – Section 480, which does suggest you can deny a professional license to someone who has been convicted of a crime.

However section 480 contains a fairly clear directive (a)(3)(B): “The board may deny a license pursuant to this subdivision only if the crime or act is substantially related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of the business or profession for which application is made.”

Because your conviction is in no way related to the work you would be doing, it seems unlikely that it should cause difficulty. If you wanted to be a school bus driver, that might be a different matter.
