How redshift allow astronomers to calculate the age of objects?
From Wikipedia: "… defined as a redshift increase the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation received by a detector compared to the wavelength emitted by the source. "How Astronomers know that the object used to be more "blue" and how to compare the current observed at the wavelength? In other words, how we know what the original wavelength emitted by the source was in order to make our estimate? Sorry, I meant the distance of age. (But I guess that the gap can also mean age.)
We use spectroscopy to break the light of distant objects. Each element has its own color scheme to some lengths wavelengths that allow us to identify it – for example, transition of hydrogen Lyman 6563 angstroms. It will always be found in the same place – but if it was moved to the object, the line is long wave, and if blueshifted, is a short wavelength. We use local sources and sources for which we measure the distance of a different way (such as Cepheid variable stars) to calibrate the spectroscope.
